2016
Tuesday, November 8, 2016 was a day that America will never forget. I remember laying on my bed with everything in my room turned off. An illness had taken over my immune system without any explanation. The night's silence was without a pin drop. Closing my eye's took some time but it eventually happened.
On my way to a class I experienced the loneliest train ride ever. It was obvious that 24hrs didn't pass since the election of Donald John Trump and people were still feeling the effects. Come to think of it this aspect felt pretty good. If one is not mistaken this probably was the quietest I have ever experienced NYC to be in general.
Entering the main building (199 Chambers Street) students and staff alike roamed the halls. Settling into my scheduled class I noticed the face of my fellow classmates. Their expressions knew that the powers that be elected their leader for them and not the other way around. Patiently waiting for the professor non of us know a thing as to what is to come regarding our class.
Being five minutes late the professor strolls through the door. Pulling up a chair she makes the class get in a circle. Out of her bag everyone was given a flashcard and a color filled marker of their choice. I don't remember what color everyone else picked, but I chose a black marker. Due to the sudden circumstance that was facing our nation most daily functions took a halt (which would include those of this class).
The main goal of this particular exercise was to write down your current feelings on three or more flashcards (using your marker of choice). Each time you are picked within the circle you are to share with the class what are your feelings by writing down one word. As time goes on the class is suppose to discuss or display every inner feeling. After this activity is complete the professor is suppose to collect all of the flashcards that displays the thoughts and concerns of the students.
By the time that the activity was completed me and my fellow classmates were relieved. It was as if we felt that we could take on Goliath and his army. The course was called Conflict Resolution (COM 250) for a reason because the love potion worked on all of us.
Heading back home the train was halfway empty. Thanks to this I was able to think a little bit more clear. Watching the train pass platform after platform so many questions enter and exit my head. It was as though America had played it's greatest magic trick and failed in her attempt. First came the dropping of the skirt. Than came all the corpse's that fell out of the closet.
Although this masquerade was for our eye's only the entire world saw it manifest as well.
